Well, the only real way most of us can find out is if you’re lucky at your 18- week scan, although even then it’s sometimes difficult to tell and mistakes can occur.
If you’ve had an amniocentesis, which is usually done at around 15 weeks, your doctor will be able to tell you the sex of your baby if you want to know.
If you are very rich, you can choose to have your baby by IVF using a process called Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis. It is illegal in the UK, unless it needs to be carried out because there is a risk of passing on a genetic disease. It is legal however in the United States and other countries abroad.
The procedure means that the eggs harvested from a women are tested for gender and then only the gender that’s wanted is implanted into the woman’s womb.
If you’re like the majority of women though, you’ll have conceived the normal way and you’ll be waiting impatiently to see whether your little bundle will be a boy or a girl. To put some fun into the waiting, there are lots and lots of old wives’ tales which claim to be able to tell the sex of your baby and it is great fun to see how many of the myths relate to you, so that you can predict whether you’ll have a boy or a girl!
They say that a baby is more likely to be a girl if your bump is high and rounded, if you crave sweet foods, or if you have suffered from morning sickness.
You’re more likely having a boy if you are didn’t suffer from morning sickness and your bump is low, you suffer from dry skin or you get headaches.
Here are some games you can have fun with too, why not have a baby shower and play these prediction games with your friends.
Ring on a String
Take your wedding ring, get some cotton or string and tie your wedding ring to it. Dangle it over your stomach. If it swings back and forth, it’s a girl and if it goes in a circle then it’s a boy.
The Numbers Game
Take the number of the last month of your period, so that’s from 1 to 12 and then add your age. For example, if you were born in February that’s a 2 and then add your age, say 32 would come to a total of 34, then take away 49, this gives you 15. Then start to take away numbers 1,2, 3, 4, until you can’t anymore, so 15 less 1 equals 14, less 2 is 12 less 3 is 9 less 4 is 5 and less 5 is zero. If you have an even number, like zero then you’re having a boy, if it turns out to be an odd number you’re having a girl.
The Key Game
Get future mum to take hold of a key. If she holds it up from the part that goes into the lock it will be a girl, but if she holds it from the other end it will be a boy. Picking it up in the middle is said to mean twins!
The Chinese Gender Chart
You use your lunar age at conception with the lunar month of conception and then use the chart to find out if you’re expecting a boy or a girl.
Once you do know the sex of the baby, you’ve got an excuse for another party to reveal the gender.
